Cosmetic Dentistry ProceduresDo you look in the mirror and think, "My smile would be perfect if that tooth wasn't chipped and discolored."? Luckily, your Kirkland, WA, cosmetic dentist, Dr. Bernard Pak offers a variety of services that can enhance your smile.

Bonding offers an excellent option for many cosmetic issues

Whether you want to repair a chip, cover a discolored tooth, improve a tooth's shape, or hide imperfections such as minor cracks, dental bonding can do it! Your Kirkland dentist applies soft composite resin to your tooth before bonding the material to your enamel with a curing light. Bonding is a simple procedure and also one of the least expensive cosmetic dentistry options.

Veneers keep common tooth problems under wraps

Thin veneers are designed to hide issues that detract from your smile, such as chips, cracks, uneven surfaces and discolorations. Because the thin shells are attached to only the fronts of your teeth, they don't require extensive preparation. In fact, your dentist will only need to remove a very small amount of tooth enamel to ensure that the veneers fit well. Translucent porcelain veneers look like tooth enamel and are available in many shades of white. If you're covering a chip or discoloration, you'll probably want to match the color of surrounding teeth, however, when overall whitening is your goal, it makes sense to choose a shade significantly lighter in order to brighten your smile.

Whitening offers a quick, easy smile transformation

Most of us notice a little yellowing over the years. Stains from foods, beverages, and the overall passage of time may dull your smile, but it doesn't have to stay that way. Professional teeth whitening can lighten your teeth by several shades, leading to a completely revitalized smile.

Your Kirkland dentist uses hydrogen peroxide gel to break apart stain-causing pigments that collect in microscopic openings in your tooth enamel. Teeth whitening results generally last about two to three years, although you can keep your teeth looking whiter for longer if you avoid substances that tend to stain teeth, such as coffee, tea, cola, berries, soy sauce, sports drinks, and brightly colored candy.

Dental Crown DiagramA dental crown is a restoration that restores a significant portion of lost tooth surface and fortifies a fractured or damaged tooth. Also known as a cap because it literally covers the tooth, crowns are one of the most durable and reliable dental restorations. A crown can also replace a missing tooth through a dental bridge. Dr. Bernard Pak, a dentist in Kirkland, WA, offers a number of cosmetic and general dentistry services for children and adults at Kirkland Smiles Dental Care.

Dental Crowns in Kirkland, WA

Crowns are a great option to restore function and make cosmetic improvements to a damaged tooth. In cases of severe tooth decay where the cavity is too big to be treated with a dental filling, a crown is often the only option available to save the tooth from extraction and more expensive restorations like dental implants. Broken or severely cracked teeth are also good candidates for dental crowns. Crowns can also be used to cover a discolored or stained tooth. Crowns are also used to cover a dental implant.

Crowns can be fabricated from a few different types of material depending on your budget and needs, such as ceramic, porcelain, or a combination of materials like glass and plastic (composite resin). Your dentist will recommend the type of crown that is best for you at your initial appointment. Most crowns require two dental appointments, where an impression is taken of the tooth and sent to an outside lab where the crown will be completed. You can usually get a temporary crown to wear until the permanent one is completed.

Caring for Dental Crowns

Like natural teeth, crowns require good oral hygiene and regular preventive care including a check up and professional cleaning every six months. With proper care, a typical crown can last for many years.

DentalMagicTransformsSmiles

Magician Michel Grandinetti can levitate a 500-pound motorcycle, melt into a 7-foot-tall wall of solid steel, and make borrowed rings vanish and reappear baked inside bread. Yet the master illusionist admits to being in awe of the magic that dentists perform when it comes to transforming smiles. In fact, he told an interviewer that it’s “way more important magic than walking through a steel wall because you’re affecting people’s health… people’s confidence, and you’re really allowing people to… feel good about themselves.”

Michael speaks from experience. As a teenager, his own smile was enhanced through orthodontic treatment. Considering the career path he chose for himself — performing for multitudes both live and on TV — he calls wearing an orthodontic device (braces) to align his crooked teeth “life-changing.” He relies on his welcoming, slightly mischievous smile to welcome audiences and make the initial human connection.

A beautiful smile is definitely an asset regardless of whether you’re performing for thousands, passing another individual on a sidewalk or even, research suggests, interviewing for a job. Like Michael, however, some of us need a little help creating ours. If something about your teeth or gums is making you self-conscious and preventing you from smiling as broadly as you could be, we have plenty of solutions up our sleeve. Some of the most popular include:

  • Tooth Whitening. Professional whitening in the dental office achieves faster results than doing it yourself at home, but either approach can noticeably brighten your smile.
  • Bonding. A tooth-colored composite resin can be bonded to a tooth to replace missing tooth structure, such a chip.
  • Veneers. This is a hard, thin shell of tooth-colored material bonded to the front surface of a tooth to change its color, shape, size and/or length; mask dental imperfections like stains, cracks, or chips, and compensating for excessive gum tissue.
  • Crowns. Sometimes too much of a tooth is lost due to decay or trauma to support a veneer. Instead, capping it with a natural-looking porcelain crown can achieve the same types of improvements. A crown covers the entire tooth replacing more of its natural structure than a veneer does.

If you would like more information about ways in which you can transform your smile, please contact us or schedule an appointment for a consultation. You can also learn more about the techniques mentioned above by reading the Dear Doctor magazine articles “Teeth Whitening,” “Repairing Chipped Teeth,” and “Porcelain Crowns & Veneers.”

How cosmetic dentistry from Kirkland can enhance your smilecosmetic dentistry

If you are looking for a way to improve and enhance your smile, you need to explore the world of cosmetic dentistry. Modern cosmetic dentistry offers many state-of-the-art techniques which can turn an ordinary smile into a dental work of art. Dr. Bernard Pak at Kirkland Smiles Dental Care in Kirkland, WA wants to help you discover what the right cosmetic dental procedure can do for your smile.

If your smile is dull and yellow due to aging, coffee or smoking, you might be looking for a professional teeth whitening treatment. These treatments are an inexpensive, quick way to rev up your smile. You can whiten your smile up to 8 shades whiter and the dramatic results you achieve can last up to 5 years! Dr. Pak offers these effective teeth whitening options:

  • In-office whitening, which takes about an hour; this option is the perfect choice to fit with your busy schedule.
  • Take-home whitening, which is a kit containing custom whitening trays and gel; this option is a great choice if you want to whiten at your own pace.

If you have teeth that are damaged, cracked or broken, you might be looking for a dental bonding treatment. Dental bonding uses a liquid resin which can be blended onto the tooth surface masking unsightly dental issues like cracks, chips and stains. The material is then hardened using a high-tech ultraviolet light and then polished perfectly to match your teeth. The result is a dental restoration that is virtually invisible.

If you want to achieve a celebrity-perfect smile that you’ve been dreaming of, you might be looking for porcelain veneers. These are thin sheaths of sparkling white porcelain which are cemented onto the front surfaces of your teeth. Porcelain veneers can completely cover up cracks, chips, defects, excessive tooth wear and other unsightly dental issues.

These are just a few of the cosmetic dental procedures you might be looking for. To view a complete list of cosmetic services, please visit the cosmetic dentistry section on the website at http://www.kirklandsmiles.com/cosmetic-dentistry.html

SpiceUpYourTeeth

As a member of the best-selling pop group Spice Girls, Mel C (AKA Sporty Spice) enjoyed her share of musical superstardom. At the band’s peak in the Nineties, the young singer’s signature look featured baggy sweatpants, an assortment of tattoos, a nose stud and a gold-capped incisor, front and center in her mouth. Today, Melanie Chisholm is still singing — but now she’s a mom, an amateur triathlete… and that gold tooth is just a memory. Not only that, her smile looks more evenly spaced and whiter than it did when she was referred to as the “tomboy” of the group.

What happened? In our view, it all boils down to changing tastes — plus a little bit of help from dental professionals. As the “wannabe” singer proves, there’s no single standard when it comes to making your teeth look their best. Your own look is unique to you — and your smile can reflect that individuality.

For example, crowns (caps) are substantial coverings that may be placed on teeth when they are being restored. They are available in three types: gold, all-porcelain, or porcelain-fused-to-metal. The latter two are tooth-colored, while the gold is — well, shiny like gold bling. Which one is right for you? In many cases, it’s your choice.

Likewise, dental veneers — wafer-thin shells that can correct cosmetic issues by covering the surface of your teeth — can be made in a variety of shades. Their hues may range from natural ivory to Hollywood white, and everything in between. What’s the best color for you? Only you can say.

Some people opt for a “smile makeover” that uses small irregularities in the spacing and color of teeth to create a more “natural” look. Other folks want a perfectly even, brilliant white smile that dazzles the eye. Still others are looking to match or restore the smile they once had — perhaps even re-creating a signature gap between the teeth. As long as there are no other dental issues involved, the choice is yours.

So if you’re unhappy with your smile — or if you feel it doesn’t reflect the person you “wannabe” — why not talk to us about a smile makeover? Just call our office to schedule a consultation. You can learn more about this topic in the Dear Doctor magazine articles “Beautiful Smiles by Design” and “The Impact of a Smile Makeover.”
